Here is a music video that I directed and edited for a band called Recluse, whose album “The Quiet Hours” will be released on the 30th of July 2015. Being the humble chaps that they are, the band didn’t want to appear in the video other then as shadows or silhouettes, so we built the video around that idea. The aim was to capture a sense of loss and regret, being haunted by your own demons and ultimately being consumed by them.
The aim was to do the shadow effects entirely in camera, which proved surprisingly difficult within the relatively confined spaces we were shooting in, but Jon Ratigan our DoP did a fantastic job with the lighting that minimised the amount of trial and error involved in getting them right. Shooting the slow motion band scenes with the flour was fun and was something that I’d wanted to try out for a while. These shots were filmed at a high framerate and then I used Twixtor in After Effects to slow the footage down to around 1% of the original speed. It created some great effects and the white, ash-like dust, felt in keeping with the themes of shadows and death that run throughout.
